The Church considers praying for the dead to be an act of mercy. We should offer prayers and sacrifices for the souls in purgatory whenever we can.

Dear Lord, we praise Your divine justice and thank You for allowing us to help the souls who are in purgatory. We pray today for the souls of the newly deceased who are in purgatory.
You have instructed us through Your Church to offer prayers and sacrifices for the suffering souls in purgatory. Those who are awaiting entrance into heaven are in great need of our prayers as they are purified in preparation. We can pray in a particular way for our family members who have recently died.
We ask You to bring into heaven all of the newly deceased, and we particularly pray today for all of our newly deceased family members.
Help us to trust in You and Your goodness in all circumstances. Give us the grace to surrender our lives fully to You.

Through Your Church, You have given us many graces and helps in the sacraments. You provide the last sacraments for us as special assistance when our lives come to an end. But many die without access to this great help. Those who die without the last sacraments are in great need of our prayers.

You call each of us to prepare ourselves for the end of our lives at every opportunity and to keep in mind that we do not know the day of our death. But many people are not fully prepared to meet You when their lives reach their end.
