About Our Lady of Hope

During the Franco-Prussian War between France and Prussia in 1870, France was suffering many defeats. In 1871, Paris was besieged and the Prussians had overtaken most of France.

During the height of this conflict, the small hamlet of Pontmain was in the path of the Prussians and was sure to be conquered. On the evening of January 17th, a boy named Eugene Barbedette took a break from the farm work he was helping his father complete. Then, he saw in the night sky a vision of a Lady.

The Lady smiled at Eugene and spread her hands in welcome. Not long after, Eugene’s brother Joseph joined him and saw the apparition as well. But the boys’ father and mother did not see the apparition.

After finishing their work and an evening meal, the boys still saw the apparition in the sky. Their parents then called some nearby Sisters to come see, but the Sisters did not see it either. Two young girls with the Sisters did see the apparition.

Word about the apparition quickly spread and several townspeople came to pray at the spot. As the vigil of prayer continued, the apparition became more and more clear. It also grew bigger and appeared covered with stars. A big oval of blue attached to four candles appeared around Our Lady. The stars around her seemed to move to make room, and to arrange themselves by twos at her feet.

Then, words appeared which said, “Pray, my children. God will answer before long. My Son lets Himself be moved.” The children became very joyful at this and began to exclaim about how beautiful she was.

Soon, Our Lady appeared deeply saddened. A big crucifix appeared with a placard of red letters that read, “Jesus Christ.”

As the crowd continued praying, the crucifix disappeared and a small white crucifix appeared. Our Lady smiled again and extended her arms downward in welcome once more. As the people began to pray evening prayer, a white veil appeared at Our Lady’s feet. The veil slowly rose to enshroud her, and the apparition disappeared when they finished evening prayer.

The apparition lasted for about three hours, until around nine p.m. That night, the advancing Prussian army changed course unexpectedly because their general was told by his commander not to take the city of Laval near Pontmain.

The apparition of Our Lady of Hope was approved by the Church in 1872.

Our Lady of Hope is also someone you can ask intercession from if you are seeking peace in the world.
