St. Pius V was pope in the 1500s. He lived during a time of great turmoil in the Church. During his papacy, he helped lead the Church in the counter-Reformation.

St. Pius V was a man of great holiness. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy pope in many aspects of your life.

About St. Pius V

St. Pius V was born in 1504 in Italy as Antonio Ghislieri. He entered the Dominican order when he was fourteen years old, taking the name Michele. When he was twenty-four, he was ordained to the priesthood.

After his ordination, the Dominican order sent him to Pavia in northern Italy. There, he spent sixteen years lecturing. Around this time, he also worked to support the papacy and to oppose the spread of Protestantism.

Before long, Father Michele was made novice master. He was also elected as prior of his monastery multiple times. Though common morality of the time was very lax, he insisted on discipline and virtue. He performed many works of penance and fasting. He also spent many hours in meditation and prayer, even during the night.

Michele was made bishop of Sutri in 1556, and he was made a cardinal in 1557. Before long, he began to be consulted frequently on Church issues. He was full of zeal for the truth and opposed the pope’s wishes to appoint a thirteen year old as a cardinal. He even held fast to his opposition when the pope placed limits on his authority in response.

Around this time, the Council of Trent was meeting over the course of eighteen years to discuss and decide a course of action in response to many troubles in the Church. The Council ended in 1563.

Michele was elected pope in 1566, taking the name Pope Pius V. Pius was faced with the extremely difficult work of shepherding the Church through the many reforms that were called for by the Council of Trent. The Church faced corruption within the clergy, the chaos of the Protestant revolt, the threat of invasion by Turks, and recurring wars.

Pius began working to establish seminaries for proper training of the clergy. He published a new catechism and breviary, as well as a new missal. He worked to enforce laws against abuses within the Church.

Pius also worked diligently to ensure that the needs of the less fortunate were met. He worked to provide food for the hungry and to build hospitals. He also gave money that was normally used for papal banquets to the poor.

Pius encountered strong opposition from rulers of various countries as he tried to implement reforms in both the Church and the state. Queen Elizabeth in England and the Roman Emperor Maximillian II were both particularly fierce in their opposition. Rulers in the Netherlands and France opposed his efforts to unite Europe against the Turkish attacks.

Despite this opposition, Pius was able to organize a fleet for defense against the Turks. This fleet won the decisive Battle of Lepanto against the Turks.

Pope Pius V is also the reason that the pope even today wears white garments. When Pius became pope, he chose to continue wearing his white Dominican habit. Throughout his time as pope, Pius continued to observe the spirit of the Dominican rule.
