About St. Bernardine of Siena

St. Bernardine of Siena was born in 1380 in Siena, Italy, to a noble family. His father was governor of Siena.

When Bernardine was six, both of his parents died. His pious aunt took over his upbringing. As a young man, he was virtuous and holy. He gained a reputation for his great abhorrence of indecent speech.

Before long, Bernardine began to pray and fast for the intention of discerning what God wanted him to do with his life. When he was seventeen, he joined a confraternity devoted to the Blessed Mother.

Around this time, the plague began to spread throughout Siena. Bernardine took it upon himself to care for victims of the plague. With ten companions assisting him, he took over leadership of the entire hospital. Though he did not contract the plague himself, he became severely exhausted and suffered from a fever for several months.

In 1403, Bernardine joined the Franciscan religious order. He was ordained a priest in 1404. Though the Franciscans typically worked as missionary preachers, Bernardine initially did little preaching because his voice was not strong. For about twelve years, his work consisted mostly of prayer and spiritual preparation.

After this time, he traveled to Milan to preach. His voice was now strong and commanding. His listeners refused to let him leave until he promised to return.

Bernardine threw himself wholeheartedly into his missionary work. He walked throughout Italy on foot, preaching for hours each day. Most preachers of his time confined their preaching to sermons during the Mass, but Bernardine preached directly to the people for over thirty years. His preaching played a large part in religious revival in Italy at the time.

Bernardine was particularly devoted to the Holy Name of Jesus. He preached about the mercy of Jesus. His preaching also focused especially on the punishment due to sin and the rewards of virtue. His style of preaching was simple and full of familiar imagery.

Several different cities attempted to make Bernardine a bishop, but he refused. In 1438, he was made vicar general of his order. As vicar general, he devoted great energy to renewing the order and bringing it back to its original spirit.

Before long, Bernardine felt the call to return to his preaching. He devoted the rest of his life to preaching. Even when he was dying, he preached for fifty days in a row.

He died in 1444, at the age of sixty-three.
