St. Christina was an early Christian martyr. Little is known for certain about St. Christina, but tradition holds that she lived during the third century. Legend says that she was a convert to Christianity.

It is believed that St. Christina was very courageous in upholding the faith. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy martyr!

About St. Christina

Legend holds that St. Christina was born in the third century, and that her father was a staunch pagan. He was so devoted to his paganism that he worshiped golden idols and distributed them to the poor.

Christina’s father wished her to become a pagan priestess rather than marry. So he imprisoned her in a room full of idols and told her to burn incense to them.

Though Christina had not been exposed to Christianity, she used her reason to deduce that the world must have been made by a great Creator. She also deduced that her father’s idols were false gods, since they were made by man.

Inspired by this knowledge, Christina began praying to the Creator and asked Him to reveal Himself to her. It is said that an angel appeared to Christina and instructed her in the Faith. The angel told her that God wished for her to be His bride, but that she would suffer a lot for this Faith.

Christina then destroyed her father’s idols and threw them out her window. Her father was enraged when he discovered her conversion to Christianity. He beat her and then had her put into prison.

While Christina was imprisoned, her mother visited her and asked Christina to renounce the Faith. Christina refused, so her father had her tried.

Christina was ordered to worship idols, renounce her Christian Faith, and ask for forgiveness. She refused to follow these orders, so she was sentenced to be tortured.

First, Christina was tied to a wheel and put through a very hot fire. Her body suffered burns, but she did not die. She was put back into prison, where she was visited by an angel. The angel healed her wounds and brought her food to eat.

Christina’s father was angry to see that she was uninjured the next morning. He ordered her thrown into a lake with a heavy stone tied around her neck. Though she began to sink, an angel appeared and untied her. When her father saw this, he said that she must be practicing sorcery.

Christina’s father intended to execute her the next morning, but he died suddenly during the night. The governor attempted to carry out her execution, but she survived each torturous punishment he gave her.

As news of these miracles spread, other Christians began to visit her in prison. Nearly three hundred people converted to Christianity as a result.

Soon, a new governor began her tortures again. She endured five days in a hot furnace but did not die. Finally, she was executed by a sword.

St. Christina’s Feast Day: July 24th
