St. John Baptist de Rossi was an Italian priest. He lived in the late 1600s-mid 1700s. He suffered from epileptic seizures, but he didn’t let that stop him from serving others.

St. John Baptist de Rossi did a lot of holy work for the poor and for prisoners. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy priest in many aspects of your life.

About St. John Baptist de Rossi

St. John Baptist de Rossi was born in Italy in 1698. His parents were very virtuous, and he was their fourth child. John’s family was of modest means.

John’s parents gave him a strong formation in the faith during his childhood. He grew to be very pious and gentle. Several outsiders noticed his devotion and took an interest in his formation as well.

When John was ten years old, a wealthy couple saw his great spiritual potential. They asked his father for approval to take him to Genoa for his education and to work as a page. He then attended school in Genoa, but his father died suddenly in 1710. John asked his mother to allow him to return home, but she told him that she felt God wanted him to finish his schooling instead.

In 1711, John went to Rome. He continued studying first under the instruction of the Jesuits. He then studied theology and philosophy under the Dominicans. He was a model student with many natural gifts and virtues, and he had a great dedication to his studies.

Around this time, John joined the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin and the Ristretto of the Twelve Apostles. These two groups were made up of lay people who were dedicated to prayer and to works of service.

John was very eager to advance in holiness, and his zealousness sometimes led him to go too far in his austere practices. He nearly ruined his health through his acts of mortification. He also began to suffer from epilepsy.

Epileptic seizures are normally an impediment to becoming a priest. John felt a very strong desire to become a priest. He was granted a dispensation in order to be ordained despite his epilepsy. In 1721, he was ordained a priest.

John felt great peace and gratitude about his vocation. He decided that, out of gratitude to God for his priestly vocation, he would not accept ecclesiastical benefits unless his religious superiors commanded him to.

John then began to devote himself to serving the homeless, the sick, and the prostitutes in Rome. He ministered in hospitals in the daytime and ministered on the streets at night. He also established a hospice for homeless women, in addition to ministering to workers and prisoners.

As John worked to minister to the dying, he was full of compassion for their suffering and for the state of their souls. His example inspired many others to holiness as well.

In 1764, John died after suffering multiple strokes.
