St. Jutta was a holy German woman who lived in the 1200s. She was married with children. She eventually joined the Third Order of St. Francis.

St. Jutta lived a life of great virtue as both a wife and a widow. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy woman in many aspects of your life.

About St. Jutta

St. Jutta was born around the year 1200 in Germany. Her parents were members of the nobility. Little is known about her childhood.

When Jutta was fifteen years old, she married another member of the nobility. During her time as a married woman, she made the pursuit of virtue her top priority. Her marriage was happy, but her piety initially angered her husband. He eventually had a change of heart and allowed their children to be raised as Catholics.

Before their children were grown, Jutta’s husband died in the middle of a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Jutta raised her children alone after his death.

All of Jutta’s children eventually entered religious life. Once her children were no longer under her care, she devoted herself even more wholeheartedly to serving God. She looked to the example of St. Elizabeth of Hungary for inspiration to embrace poverty and charitable works.

Jutta received permission from her confessor to give away all of her belongings to the poor. She entered the Third Order of St. Francis and lived the life of a wandering pilgrim. She wore simple clothes and no shoes.

Jutta also devoted herself to ministry to the homeless and the poor. She cared for lepers, visited hovels, and even welcomed the poor into her own home to care for them. Some of Jutta’s contemporaries mocked her pious works, but others were moved by her example. She felt herself honored to serve Jesus through serving the poor.

Jutta had a deep prayer life, receiving visions of Jesus and an infused knowledge of Scripture. In one apparition, Christ encouraged her to continue her service to the poor and told her that His treasures were hers.

In 1260, Jutta chose to live as a hermit in the forest. For the rest of her life, she devoted herself to prayer. She was especially concerned with praying for the conversion of sinners and for the new converts to the faith in Prussia.

She continued living as a hermit for four years. In 1264, she suffered from a fever that led to her death. Her confessor attempted to bury her quietly without announcing her death, as she had requested. But many people gathered anyway for her funeral, and a wonderful odor filled the church. A chapel was built in her honor, and several miracles occurred there. The miracles occurring at her tomb, as well as her great example of holiness, led to her canonization process beginning just fifteen years after her death.

St. Jutta’s Feast Day: May 5th

Why Pray the St. Jutta Novena?

St. Jutta was the patron saint of Prussia. Though Prussia no longer exists, you can use this novena to seek St. Jutta’s intercession if you live in what used to be Prussia. Or you can pray the St. Jutta Novena to ask her to pray for someone you know who lives in the area that used to be Prussia.

Additionally, you can pray the St. Jutta Novena if you are trying to practice virtue as a lay person, since she lived a very virtuous life as a wife and mother.

You can pray the St. Jutta Novena for any intention!
