St. Leopold Mandic was a priest from Eastern Europe. He lived in the 1800s-1900s and spent most of his life in Italy. He was a member of the Capuchins.

St. Leopold Mandic was a holy and skilled confessor despite suffering from physical disabilities. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy priest in many aspects of your life.

About St. Leopold Mandic

St. Leopold Mandic was born in 1866 in what is now Montenegro. His birth name was Bogdan Ivan Mandic. His parents had eleven children before him, and they owned a fishing fleet.

Bogdan suffered from a physical disability, growing to only about four feet five inches tall. He also walked clumsily.

From a young age, Bogdan wanted to enter religious life. A group of Capuchin friars ministered nearby during his childhood, and he felt drawn to their way of life.

When Bogdan was sixteen years old, he traveled to Udine in Italy in order to enter a Capuchin high school seminary there. When he was eighteen, he was admitted to the Capuchin novitiate. He received the religious name Leopold Maria.

At age nineteen, Leopold made his first profession of vows. He then began studies for the priesthood. When he was twenty-four years old, Leopold was ordained a priest.

During the early years of his priesthood, Leopold was stationed at Capuchin friaries in Venice and in Croatia. He was sometimes given household duties, often serving as a porter. He also taught seminarians.

In 1906, Leopold was stationed at the Friary of Santa Croce in Padua. He spent the rest of his life at this friary.

Despite his physical disabilities, Leopold grew very strong spiritually. He became popular as a confessor. He was known to spend twelve to fifteen hours per day hearing confessions.

Leopold predicted that after he died, the confessional where he had spent so much time would remain standing while the rest of the church would be demolished by bombs. He said, “The church and the friary will be hit by bombs, but not this little cell. Here God exercised so much mercy for people, it must remain as a monument to God’s goodness.”

His prediction came to pass during World War II, when the church and part of the friary were demolished by bombs. Leopold’s confessional and his cell were unharmed.

Leopold was very passionate about the need for reunion between the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches. He became known as an Apostle of Unity, as well as an Apostle of Confession.

Later in his life, Leopold contracted cancer of the esophagus which became fatal. When he was seventy-six years old, he collapsed while preparing to celebrate Mass. The other friars took him to his cell and gave him Last Rites. They gathered around his bed and sang the “Salve Regina” as he died.

Leopold was beatified by St. Paul VI in 1976. He was canonized in 1983 by St. John Paul II.
