About St. Madeleine Sophie Barat
St. Madeleine Sophie Barat was born in 1779 in Joigny, France. Because she was born two months premature, her parents had her baptized almost immediately in case she didn’t survive. Sophie’s parents were financially comfortable.
When Sophie was a child, her older brother took charge of her education. Though most young women at the time received little education, Sophie’s brother taught her Greek, Latin, Italian, Spanish, history, and science.
When French society began to be uprooted by the French Revolution, Sophie’s brother was arrested. At the time, he was a deacon. He was imprisoned for two years. After he was released in 1795, he returned home briefly before returning to Paris to be ordained to the priesthood. He took Sophie with him in order to continue teaching her.
While living in Paris, Sophie studied mathematics, scripture, the Fathers of the Church, and Latin. During this time, she also discerned her vocation to be a nun. She wanted to join the Carmelites, but the Carmelites had been disbanded by the French Revolution in 1790. So Sophie lived a life of study and prayer for five years.
In 1800, Sophie met Father Joseph Varin who wanted to establish a women’s religious order devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Sophie soon determined that she was called to establish this new order. With three other young women, she took vows as a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart.
The Society of the Sacred Heart began to grow quickly. The sisters opened a school in northern France, and they soon opened a school for the poor as well.
In 1802 when Sophie was twenty-three years old, she was made superior of the Society of the Sacred Heart. As the order expanded, she eventually served as superior at several different convents.
In 1820, Sophie called together all of the convent superiors of the order so that a uniform course of study could be established for Sacred Heart schools. The goal was to create schools that fostered serious academic instruction to cultivate the mind. She also wanted to ensure that the schools would form young women in devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The order soon expanded even further, and Sophie saw that there was a need for greater unity. So she sought papal approval of the order. In 1826, the Society of the Sacred Heart received formal approval from the Church.
Sophie led the Society of the Sacred Heart for sixty years. She died in 1879.
