About St. Marianne Cope

St. Marianne Cope was born in 1838 in Germany as Barbara Koop. A year after she was born, her parents moved with her to the United States. The family lived in Utica, New York, and changed their last name to the more Americanized name of “Cope.”

During her childhood, Barbara attended Catholic school. When she was around thirteen years old, her father became unable to work because of an illness. Barbara left school in order to help support her family by working in a textile factory. Though Barbara felt called to religious life, she postponed pursuing her vocation in order to continue supporting her family.

In 1862, Barbara’s father died. Barbara was twenty-four years old at the time, and her younger siblings were now able to help support the family. She was free to pursue her religious vocation.

Barbara entered the Sisters of St. Francis in Syracuse, New York. She was given the name Marianne and began to work as a teacher. Though she thought she would continue to teach, she ended up working in administration. She helped establish some of the first hospitals in the area.

In 1870, Marianne began working as a nurse-administrator at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She became known for her kindness and wisdom. She was always willing to treat patients whom others viewed as outcasts, like alcoholics. Before long, Marianne became Mother Provincial in Syracuse.

In 1883, Marianne received a letter asking for her help ministering to lepers in Hawaii. Marianne felt called to begin this new work. With six other sisters of St. Francis, she traveled to Honolulu. There, they began to manage a hospital for patients diagnosed with leprosy.

Marianne and her sisters made improvements to the hospital and to the treatment of the patients there. Soon, they also opened a home for children of leper patients on the hospital compound because these children often had no one to care for them.

In 1884, Marianne met Fr. Damien of Molokai. When he became ill with the leprosy of those he had ministered to, Marianne accepted the task of taking over the boys’ home he had founded. She and her sisters also ran a home for girls.

The work of Marianne and her sisters was very difficult and depressing, as they cared for those suffering so severely from leprosy. But Marianne never wavered in optimism and trust in God. She encouraged her sisters to not fear catching leprosy, and she worked to make life as comfortable and pleasant as possible for those suffering from the disease.

Marianne died in 1918 from natural causes.
