About St. Mary of Jesus Crucified

St. Mary of Jesus Crucified was born in 1846 near Nazareth, as Mariam Baouardy. Before her birth, Mariam’s parents had conceived twelve children. But all twelve died as infants. Her parents made a pilgrimage to Bethlehem to pray for a daughter. Mariam was born not long after, and they named her Mariam in honor of Our Lady.

When Mariam was less than three years old, both of her parents contracted a disease and died. While dying, her father commended her to the care of St. Joseph.

After her parents’ death, Mariam lived with an uncle. Her only surviving brother went to live with an aunt, and Mariam never saw him again.

Mariam was a pious child with a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. When she was still very young, Mariam chose to fast each Saturday in honor of Our Lady. She also often gathered flowers to put in front of an icon of Mary.

Mariam’s family soon moved to Alexandria, and they arranged a marriage for her when she was about thirteen years old. Mariam had already decided to become a nun, and her uncle was infuriated when she told him that Jesus would be her only spouse. Her uncle forced her to become a kitchen servant as punishment.

Mariam decided to try to contact her brother, attempting to send him a message through a Muslim servant who was traveling to the city where her brother lived. But the Muslim servant tried to make Mariam deny her faith. She refused, so he slit her throat and threw her body by the side of the road.

Though the servant had thought her dead and the wounds should have killed her, Mariam later said that a nun wearing blue stitched up her wound, took her to a cave, and gave her soup to eat.

The nun, whom Mariam later realized was Our Lady, told Mariam she would not see her family again. Instead, she said Mariam would become a daughter of St. Joseph, then would become a Carmelite, and finally would die in Bethlehem.

Mariam worked as a servant for some time after this, and she made a vow of chastity when she was fifteen. When she was eighteen, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition. She began to experience ecstasies and the stigmata.

She did not make her vows here. She was asked to leave because some of the other sisters were upset about the mystical graces she possessed. Mariam entered a Carmelite monastery in 1867, taking the religious name Mary of Jesus Crucified.

Mary of Jesus Crucified helped establish a Carmelite monastery in Bethlehem. She was in charge of overseeing those building the monastery because she was the only sister who spoke Arabic. While carrying water to the workmen, she fell and injured her arm. The injury became gangrenous, and she died from the infection.
