About St. Teresa of the Andes

St. Teresa of the Andes was born in 1900 as Juana Enriqueta Josefina de los Corazones Fernández Solar. Juana had five siblings.

As a child, Juana was pious but also struggled with her temper. She was often unpredictable, stubborn, and prone to anger. On at least one occasion, she got into a physical fight with her sister because of her anger problems. Juana also struggled with vanity. However, she was intrinsically loving. During her early years, Juana loved to sing and dance. She also enjoyed swimming, croquet, and tennis. She played piano and harmonium.

When Juana was about seven years old, she began her education at a school that was run by Sacred Heart sisters. Around this time, she read The Story of a Soul, the autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux. Reading about this saint greatly impacted Juana, strengthening her pious and innocent character. The book also helped Juana to realize that she wanted to devote her life to God.

Juana had to work hard to overcome her faults, especially her tendency toward self-centeredness. Knowing that she would soon receive her First Communion helped her to work more zealously in overcoming her faults so that she might be more worthy to receive Jesus.

When Juana was fourteen years old, she decided to pursue the religious vocation as a Carmelite nun. She soon made a private vow of virginity, and she renewed this vow regularly.

In 1917 when Juana was seventeen years old, she sent a letter to the prioress of the nearby Carmelite convent, stating her desire to enter the Carmelites. Not long after, Juana discussed the matter with her mother, but her mother told her that Juana’s father would make the decision of whether or not she could enter the Carmelites.

In 1919, Juana sent a letter to her father, asking him for permission to enter the Carmelites. He did not immediately give her his permission, but he agreed to allow her to enter a couple of months later.

In May of 1919, Juana entered the Discalced Carmelites in Los Andes as a novice. Her religious name was Teresa of Jesus.

Teresa soon began to write letters discussing the spiritual life. But not long after, she became ill with typhus. She may have also suffered from the Spanish flu. By April of 1920, her condition had considerably worsened. Though she was not scheduled to make her vows for another six months, she was given permission to make her vows early because she was facing death. She died on April 12, 1920.
