St. Walburga was a missionary who lived in the 700s. She grew up in the area that is now England. She served as a missionary to the Frankish Empire, the area that would later become Germany.

St. Walburga became a nun and lived a very holy life. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy nun in many aspects of your life.

About St. Walburga

St. Walburga was born around the year 710, most likely in the area that is now Devon, England. She had at least two brothers, and her father was probably an underking of the West Saxons.

In 721, Walburga’s father left on a pilgrimage to Rome. He took Walburga’s two brothers with him. Walburga was around eleven years old at the time. Her father put her into the care of the abbess of Wimborne Abbey in what is now the southwest of England.

After Walburga had been at the abbey for about a year, she learned that her father had died before completing the pilgrimage. He was buried in Luca, Italy, where he died. After their father was buried, Walburga’s two brothers decided to complete the pilgrimage to Rome.

By the time Walburga’s brothers completed the pilgrimage, they had become very ill with what was probably either the plague or malaria. Both of her brothers recovered. One remained in Rome and the other went on a further pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Both eventually entered the monastic life.

Throughout this time, Walburga remained in the monastery where her father left her. She was educated and eventually became a nun. She remained in the Wimborne monastery for twenty-six years. While there, she became skilled in copying and ornamenting manuscripts as well as in a type of embroidery that was in great demand throughout Europe.

In 737, Walburga’s uncle, St. Boniface, recruited her two brothers to assist him in missionary work. At the time, the people of the Frankish Empire were still pagans, so Boniface planned to evangelize them. Walburga traveled with her brothers to Francia in the Frankish Empire to assist in their evangelization work.

Walburga’s training in the Wimborne monastery gave her the skills needed to write an account of their travels and of her brother’s earlier travels to the Holy Land. Because of this, Walburga is often considered the first female author of England and of Germany.

Walburga became a nun in a monastery that was founded by one of her brothers. Though her brother initially led the monastery, he appointed her as his successor. When he died in 751, she became the abbess.

Walburga died in February of either 777 or 779. Her remains were moved to a town in Bavaria called Eichstatt. The area where her bones were buried eventually began to exude a miraculous oil. Several miracles have occurred at her shrine.

St. Walburga’s Feast Day: February 25th
