Show HideOur Lady of Peace is a title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The tradition surrounding this title dates back to the 1500s. Devotion to Mary under the title Our Lady of Peace originated in France.

About Our Lady of Peace
Devotion to Our Lady of Peace began when a man named Jean de Joyeuse gave a statue of Our Lady to his bride. The statue showed Mary holding the Christ Child with her left hand and arm. In her right hand, she held an olive branch.
The statue became a family heirloom. When Jean’s grandson, Henri Joyeuse, entered a Capuchin Franciscan monastery in Paris, he took the statue with him.
In 1657, the Capuchin monastery built a new chapel. A large crowd attended the dedication of this new chapel. Even King Louis XIV was in attendance. The papal nuncio to France blessed and enthroned the statue of Our Lady of Peace during the ceremony. Eventually, Pope Alexander VII gave this date as the feast of Our Lady of Peace for the Capuchin order.
When the Capuchin friars were forced to leave their monastery during the violence of the French Revolution, they took the statue of Our Lady of Peace with them so that it would not be destroyed or desecrated by the violent rebels.
After the French Revolution ended and Catholics were no longer being persecuted, the statue of Our Lady of Peace was taken out of hiding. It was put into the trust of a priest named Father Peter Coudrin.
Together with a woman named Henriette Aymer de Chevalerie, Father Peter Coudrin established a religious order for priests, brothers, and sisters. They called the order the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and the Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. Members of this order are often called the Sacred Heart religious.
Father Peter gave the statue of Our Lady of Peace to Mother Aymer. She had the statue enshrined in the chapel of her convent in 1806.
Another tradition holds that an image of Our Lady of Peace was found during the late 1600s in a box in El Salvador that could not be opened. Merchants put the box onto a donkey’s back, but when passing a nearby church, the donkey stopped walking and refused to move.
When the donkey stopped, the merchants were able to open the box and found the statue of Our Lady of Peace. There was a bloody conflict raging in the area at the time, but when word spread about the discovery of the image of Our Lady of Peace, the soldiers immediately ceased fighting.

Why Pray the Our Lady of Peace Novena?
Our Lady of Peace is the patron saint of peace. You can seek her intercession if you are praying for peace in the whole world or in a particular area of the world.
Our Lady of Peace is also the patron saint of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. You can ask Our Lady of Peace to pray for all members of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary or for a particular member of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
Additionally, Our Lady of Peace is the patron saint of El Salvador, Maine, and Hawaii, so you can seek her intercession if you live in one of these areas or are planning to travel to one of these areas.
