About Our Lady of the Rosary

In the 1500s, Christians were in danger from the attacks of the Ottoman Empire. The Muslim Ottoman Empire was very powerful and had the material resources to conquer many Christian lands.

Pope Pius V realized that the advancing of the Muslim Ottomans was an immense threat to Christianity itself, since the conquering Muslims would not allow the Christians they conquered to continue practicing their faith. Because of this, Pope Pius V worked to unite several Christian nations to fight against the Ottoman Empire.

The Papal States, Spain, and Venice united in one naval force to fight against the Ottoman Empire. This coalition was called the Holy League.

On October 7, 1571, the Holy League set sail from Messina, Sicily. They met the Muslim navy in the Gulf of Lepanto. Pope Pius V knew that the Holy League was greatly disadvantaged against the powerful fleet of the Ottoman Empire. So he asked all Christians throughout Europe to pray the Rosary for victory in battle. He himself led a Rosary procession through Rome.

The Battle of Lepanto was particularly significant in the preservation of Christianity against Muslim agression. A victory for the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Lepanto could have given the Muslims access to the Atlantic Ocean and the Americas. It also could have allowed the Ottoman Empire to invade Italy. The sultan of the Ottoman Empire, who called himself the emperor of the Romans, could then have been in possession of Old Rome and New Rome.

Because of the great significance the Battle of Lepanto held for the future of Christianity, Pope Pius V urged Christians to pray fervently for victory.

While Christians throughout Europe prayed, the two naval forces fought for about five hours near western Greece on the north side of the Gulf of Corinth. Despite a great material disadvantage, the Holy League was able to defeat the forces of the Ottoman Empire. Many people considered the Christian victory to be miraculous because the material disadvantage of the Christian forces was so great.

Pope Pius V attributed the unlikely victory of the Christian forces to the intercession of Our Lady. In thanksgiving for Mary’s intercession and to commemorate the victory at the Battle of Lepanto, he instituted the feast of Our Lady of Victory.

Pope Gregory XIII changed the feast to the Feast of the Holy Rosary in 1573, and he moved its celebration to the first Sunday in October. During the liturgical reforms of the 1900s, the feast was moved to October 7th and given the name of the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.
