Show HideSaints Philip and James share a feast day that commemorates the anniversary of the dedication of the sixth century church in Rome that is named after them. However, it is now called the Church of the Twelve Apostles.
Saint Philip and Saint James were both apostles of Jesus and they were martyred as the spread the faith of the early church around the world.
Saint Philip the apostle was one of the first of the disciples that Jesus called to follow him. On the way from Judea to Galilee, Jesus found Philip and said, “Follow me.” Philip obeyed immediately. Philip’s zeal and charity brought Nathaniel along to also follow Jesus. He was present at the miracle of the loaves and the fishes just before the Lord’s Passion. Jesus answered Philip’s request to show the apostles the Father and he was also in the upper room awaiting the Holy Spirit. He preached in Greece and was crucified upside down.
Saint James the apostle, also known as Saint James the Less or Saint James the Just, was working by the seashore when Jesus called him to be an apostle. Jesus appeared to him after the Resurrection. St. James was known for his holiness and he was the first bishop of Jerusalem. He was thrown from the top of the temple in Jerusalem, then stoned and beaten with clubs. He prayed for his attackers before he died. St. James’ body is in a church that bears his name in the city of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The church is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in the world.
Their feast day is May 3rd.
