About St. Crispin of Viterbo

St. Crispin of Viterbo was born in 1668 in Italy. His birth name was Pietro Fioretti. Pietro’s mother was a widow with a daughter from her previous marriage. His father died before Pietro’s fifth birthday.

When Pietro was six years old, his mother took him to a nearby Marian shrine. There, she consecrated Pietro to Mary and placed him under Our Lady’s protection. Pietro’s mother told him to honor Mary as a good son, and he began to call Mary his other mother.

During Pietro’s childhood, he became known for his piousness and for his knowledge of the saints. Those who knew him often called him the “little saint.” He was educated by Jesuit priests until he was old enough to study shoemaking from his uncle.

When Pietro was twenty-five years old, he saw a Francsican procession that helped him recognize his call to religious life. He soon entered the novitiate of the Capuchin house in Viterbo. He took the name Crispin of Viterbo.

In the Viterbo friary, Crispin served as a gardener and a cook. In 1694, Crispin’s superior sent him to Tolfa. There, he served as an infirmarian for three years. It is believed that God worked miracles of healing through him during this time.

Crispin was transferred to several other monasteries over the next thirteen years. In 1710, he was sent to Oviedo, Spain. At the friary there, he made a small Marian shrine in the kitchen.

During this time, Crispin lived an austere life. He lived in a small room and woke up early each day in order to meditate. He ate little and sometimes slept on the roof. He spent time begging for alms. The housewives from whom he begged became so fond of him that when his superior appointed another man to beg, the housewives demanded Crispin be sent again. Crispin also often visited the imprisoned and the sick.

Crispin’s reputation for holiness spread. Many cardinals and bishops visited him, and even Pope Clement XI visited him at work in his kitchen in order to speak with him.

In 1747, Crispin became so ill that his superiors thought he would die. But he recovered and soon returned to his former duties. In 1750, his health began to decline again. He died from pneumonia in Rome soon after.

When Crispin’s remains were exhumed in 1959, his body was found to be incorrupt. He was canonized in 1982 by St. John Paul II.
