About St. Isidore of Seville

St. Isidore of Seville was born around the year 560 in Cartagena, Spain. His parents were both members of the nobility. It is not known for certain how many siblings he had, but he had three siblings who became recognized as saints.

As a young boy, Isidore began his studies under the guidance of his older brother, Leander. Leander was the Archbishop of Seville, and he was a very harsh teacher towards Isidore. Despite the harshness of Isidore’s early school experience, he grew to love learning and made it his life’s work.

Scholars debate whether or not Isidore ever entered monastic life, but it is apparent that he considered this vocation as highly important.

When Leander died around the year 600, Isidore became archbishop of Seville. One of Isidore’s first actions as archbishop was to ensure that the monks in his archdiocese were protected. Next, he looked to the state of society within his archdiocese and developed a course of action to promote the spiritual welfare of his people.

Though the Roman culture had been strong in his area in the past, the barbarian Visigoths had been ruling for some time. The Visigoths did allow some remnants of Roman culture to remain, but Roman culture continued to decline. Meanwhile, these Visigoths became instructed in Arianism, and the Arian heresy spread among Isidore’s people.

Isidore saw the need to assist in uniting these sects and subcultures into a united nation. He made use of every resource he had to achieve this end. He succeeded in bringing about unity, and he got rid of the Arian heresy almost entirely in the area. He also halted the spread of a new heresy called the Acephali Heresy shortly after its beginning.

Isidore also worked to counteract barbarism through education in his archdiocese. He promoted the establishment of more seminaries throughout all of Spain. In addition to promoting the study of theology, Isidore also wrote books on grammar, history, geography, and other subjects. Additionally, he introduced the study of Aristotle to philosophy students.

During his time as archbishop, Isidore presided over two provincial Church councils and one national Church council.

Isidore was archbishop of Seville for thirty-seven years. Before his death when he was almost eighty, his home was filled with the poor as he distributed alms. Isidore gave away all his possessions to the poor. He died in 636.
