About St. Pancras
St. Pancras was born around the year 289 in the area that is now Turkey. Along with St. Mamertus and St. Servatius, he has been traditionally known as one of the Ice Saints. These three men were called the Ice Saints because their feast days in May often brought the last cold period of the season.
Though many details of Pancras’ life are not known for certain, tradition holds that his parents were Roman citizens and were not Christians. When Pancras was nine years old, his mother died from a complication of childbirth. His father experienced deep grief over the death of his wife and soon died as well.
After the death of his parents left him an orphan, Pancras was cared for by an uncle named Dionysius. Dionysius took young Pancras to Rome. They lived in a villa there on the Caelian Hill, one of Rome’s seven famous hills.
Before long, a Christian man named Marcellinus instructed Pancras and his uncle in the faith. Both of them converted to Christianity, and Pancras became very devoted to his new faith. Pancras’ uncle soon died. Though Pancras was still a boy, he lived on his own.
Around this time, Emperor Diocletian began a persecution of Christians. Pancras was arrested and taken to the Roman authorities. They commanded him to offer a sacrifice to their pagan gods. Pancras courageously refused to do this.
He was so determined in his resistance that Emperor Diocletian was impressed by him. Diocletian bribed Pancras with offers of great power and wealth if he would renounce the Christian faith by offering a sacrifice to the pagan gods. Despite these bribes, Pancras refused.
Emperor Diocletian eventually gave up his efforts to persuade Pancras to abandon the Christian faith. He ordered that Pancras be beheaded on the Roman road called Via Aurelia. The year of Pancras’ death is thought to be around the year 303 or 304, which would have made him fourteen years old at the time of his death.
A Roman woman named Octavilla took Pancras’ body. She covered his body with balsam, wrapped it in linens, and gave him a burial in a sepulcher in the catacombs. His head was eventually put into a reliquary. This reliquary still exists today in the Basilica of St. Pancras in Rome. This basilica was built in the early sixth century over the site of Pancras’ burial.
St. Pancras’ Feast Day: May 12th
