About St. Patricia

The year of St. Patricia’s birth is not known for certain, but it is believed that she was born in Constantinople during the 6th century. Much of what is believed to be true about her life is from tradition and legend.

It is believed that Patricia was born to a noble family in Constantinople. Some sources say that she was related to the Roman Emperor, and other sources hold that she was one of Emperor Constantine’s descendants. It is also believed that she was raised in the royal court and was instructed in the Christian faith by a holy woman named Aglaia.

When Patricia was a young woman, Emperor Constans II of the Byzantine Empire arranged a marriage for her. But Patricia did not wish to marry. She had already made a vow of virginity and wished to be a nun.

In order to escape the marriage that had been arranged for her, Patricia fled Constantinople. Aglaia accompanied Patricia on her journey. They traveled by boat to Rome. When they reached Rome, she received the veil of a Bride of Christ from Pope Liberius. She officially consecrated herself to God.

Patricia’s father eventually died, so she made the journey from Rome back to Constantinople. In Constantinople, she gave up her inheritance and all of her earthly possessions. She distributed this wealth to the poor. It is also believed that, though Patricia may have had some claim to the imperial throne, she renounced it.

After this, Patricia wished to serve God by visiting the places Our Lord sanctified during His time on earth. She made plans to travel on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land with Aglaia.

As Patricia and Aglaia traveled by ship to the Holy Land, a violent storm hit the ship and turned it in the opposite direction of the Holy Land. The storm took them to the shore of Naples, Italy. It is believed that they took refuge on a rock near the shore, which later came to be called Castel dell’Ovo.

Patricia and Aglaia spent some months living a life of penance and prayer. But Patricia soon fell ill. She died shortly after, at the age of 21.

Patricia was buried at a church dedicated to Sts. Nicandro and Marciano. Her spiritual daughters, the Patrician Sisters, moved her relics to the Monastery of St. Gregorio Armeno in 1864.

Legend holds that a knight once pulled one of the teeth out of her body and that blood miraculously flowed from the socket. Every year on her feast day, in addition to other times, her blood miraculously liquifies.

St. Patricia’s Feast Day: August 25th
