About Venerable Patrick Peyton
Venerable Patrick Peyton was born in Ireland in 1909. He had eight siblings, and his parents were poor farmers. Patrick’s family was very religious. His father dedicated Patrick to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and his mother put him under the care of the Blessed Mother.
During Patrick’s childhood, he was strong-willed and came into conflict with authority at his school. He eventually dropped out of school, but he remained religious despite his rebellious behavior.
When Patrick was a teenager, he began to consider a vocation to the priesthood. Some of his siblings had left Ireland for America, but Patrick remained behind to help his ill father with farmwork. In 1928, Patrick and his brother Tom sailed to America. They settled in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Patrick soon found a job as a janitor at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Scranton. The time he spent at the cathedral helped him to hear God’s call to the priesthood once again.
When a priest from the Congregation of the Holy Cross came to St. Peter’s Cathedral searching for new seminarians in 1929, Patrick felt called to join the congregation. His brother, Tom, felt drawn to the congregation as well. The two of them entered the seminary a few months later.
During Patrick’s second year studying theology, he contracted tuberculosis. He was ill for a year and had to rest in the infirmary. A priest of the Congregation of the Holy Cross told Patrick to seek Mary’s help with great faith. Patrick prayed a Rosary novena, and he was cured of his tuberculosis at the end of the novena.
In 1941, Patrick and his brother were ordained to the priesthood together as members of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. Patrick was grateful to Mary for saving his life from tuberculosis, so he decided to dedicate his priesthood to spreading devotion to the Rosary. He was particularly devoted to spreading the practice of the family Rosary, which he had first experienced in his own home as a child.
Patrick was assigned as a chaplain to Holy Cross brothers in Albany. He soon began a campaign to spread devotion to the Rosary far and wide. By 1948, he began traveling the world to host Rosary rallies. Two of his rallies drew over two million people each.
Eager to find ways to spread his message more broadly, Patrick began using the media to broadcast his Rosary rallies. He even convinced celebrities Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, and James Cagney to help him promote the Rosary. He became famous for his saying “The family that prays together stays together.
Patrick’s efforts eventually led to the formation of Holy Cross Family Ministries to continue to spread his message. He died in 1992, while holding a Rosary.
