Blessed Carlo Acutis died in 2006 at the age of 15, but not before making a profound impact on his community and on the world. This young man’s intense love for Christ in the Eucharist and for our Blessed Mother inspired everyone who knew him.

Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati is a modern model of Catholic young adult life. His devotion to his faith is still an inspiration to young adults today.

You can pray the Bl. Carlo Acutis and Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati Canonization Novena to ask for their intercession.

About Bl. Carlo Acutis and Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati

Carlo Acutis

Carlo Acutis was born in London but raised in Milan. He had a great love for Jesus and Mary from a young age. His mother remembers that, at age four, he would pick flowers to present to a statue of Mary. He would also kiss Jesus on the crucifix.

As Carlo grew, so did his devotion. He received his First Communion at the age of seven, and from that time on he said the Rosary every day and went to daily Mass.

Carlo was extremely bright and eventually found his passion in computer programming. He combined this love with his love of Christ in the Eucharist. This inspired him to create a website cataloging Eucharistic miracles around the world.

“The Eucharist is my highway to heaven,” Carlo said. He rightly understood that the Eucharist transforms lives and gives a foretaste of heaven.

When not programming, Carlo was a normal kid having fun with his friends. But he was always encouraging them to do the right thing, to speak kindly, and to help others. He and his mother would volunteer with the homeless, taking them blankets and food, and he would encourage his friends to join them. Carlo also taught catechism classes at his church.

Carlo went to confession regularly and kept a journal of his behaviors, noting what he could do better.

At 15, Carlo fell ill and thought he had the flu. However, his sickness didn’t improve, so his parents took him to the doctor. They were told that he had an aggressive form of leukemia. It was an illness that would quickly take his life.

Though Carlo was in a lot of pain and knew that he would soon die, he offered up those sufferings for the Church and Pope Benedict.

He told his mother: “I die happy because I did not spend my life wasting my time on things not pleasing to God.”

Just a week after his family received the diagnosis—on October 12, 2006—Carlo died.

People—strangers and friends alike—packed the church for his funeral. They told story after story of how his witness changed their lives.

Pier Giorgio Frassati

Pier Giorgio Frassati was born in Italy in 1901. His father began a popular newspaper and was well known in the government. As a result, the Frassatis were wealthy.

Pier Giorgio was blessed with a devotion to God from a young age. His childlike faith centered on the Eucharist and Mary.

Pier Giorgio saw his wealth as a way to care for others. The majority of his spending money went to those who did not have enough food. He befriended many of the poor people in his neighborhood. He did these acts quietly. No one knew who he was. His family also didn’t realize the extent of his charity.

Pier Giorgio was a daily Communicant. He was also an active participant in the Marian Solidarity, the Apostleship of Prayer, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Catholic Student Foundation, Catholic Action, and the People’s Party.

Pier Giorgio was a college student in Italy. His major was mining engineering. Pier Giorgio’s other passions included mountain climbing, art and music, and attending the theater or opera.

When he was 24, Pier Giorgio fell ill with polio. The doctors believed he got sick from the poor he served. On his deathbed, he asked a friend to look after someone he had been serving. His illness was actually so severe because he had been too busy taking care of his sick grandmother to worry about his own health.

Pier Giorgio died on July 4, 1925. His family was shocked to see how many poor people attended his funeral. Likewise, the poor were shocked to find out who his family was and how wealthy he was.

In 1981, Pier Giorgio’s body was found to be undecayed. In 1990, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II.

The phrase “Verso l’alto” is often associated with Bl. Pier Giorgio. It means “toward the top.” Pier Giorgio wrote this on the back of a photo of his last mountain climb. It is fitting for this holy young man, for he was always trying to become closer to God.
