About Mary, Mother of God
In the 400s, an archbishop of Constantinople named Nestorius began to teach that Mary could be called the Christ-bearer (or Christotokos in Greek), but not the God-bearer (or Theotokos in Greek). Under his leadership, this Nestorian heresy began to gain traction in the Church.
The Nestorian heresy taught that Jesus’ human and divine natures could be separated, and it viewed Mary as the Mother of only Jesus’ human nature. Certain that he was correct in this erroneous teaching, Nestorian urged that a council be called to settle the matter.
In 431, the Council of Ephesus was called. About two hundred fifty bishops convened in the Church of Mary in Ephesus. St. Cyril of Alexandria, who was a heated opponent of Nestorius and the Nestorian heresy, helped lead the proceedings.
The Council discussed Nestorius’ assertions that seemed to detach Jesus into two persons, one human and one divine. Cyril claimed that Nestorius’ teachings denied that Christ was both human and divine at one and the same time.
The Council of Ephesus confirmed that the teachings of the Nicene Council and the Nicene Creed were correct. And the Council condemned the teachings of Nestorius on Mary as heresy. The Council asserted that Mary was not only the mother of Christ in His human nature but that she is the Mother of Christ in every way. It confirmed that she is the Mother of God, or the Theotokos.
The teachings of the Church that view Mary as the Mother of God did not begin at the Council of Ephesus. The Council of Ephesus merely confirmed the teachings that the Church had always taught, and asserted that those who addressed Mary as Mother of God were theologically correct in doing so.
When the session of the Council of Ephesus that discussed these matters was ended, there were crowds of people in the streets crying out, “Praised be the Theotokos!”
The title of Mary, Mother of God has a Scriptural basis. In Luke 1:42-43 when Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth, Elizabeth says, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”
During the Second Vatican Council, this teaching and the title Mary, Mother of God were again confirmed. The Dogmatic Constitution on the Church that came from Vatican II refers to Mary as the Mother of God twelve times.

Mary, Mother of God, you were chosen by God from all eternity to bear His Son. You willingly accepted your role in God’s plan for our salvation. By becoming the Mother of God, you became our Mother also.
