There are many reasons and circumstances that can lead to a person being put in prison. We may never know all of the contributing factors that led a particular person to become a prisoner, but we do know that being a prisoner is both a trying circumstance and an opportunity for change.
Jesus tells us in the Gospels that we are to care for the imprisoned by visiting them, and that we care for Jesus Himself when we care for prisoners.
Depending on our own life circumstances, it might not always be possible or practical for us to visit prisoners personally ourselves. But if that is the case, we can certainly care for prisoners in other ways.
One of the best ways that we can show our love to Our Lord through caring for prisoners is by praying for prisoners.
Let’s pray this Novena for Prisoners, so that we can care for Jesus through this care for the imprisoned!

You can pray this novena for a particular prisoner whom you know. You can use this novena to pray for a prisoner’s conversion or for their wellbeing.
You can also use this novena to pray for a group of prisoners in a particular prison. You can pray for the conversion of the group of prisoners, or you can pray for their wellbeing.
Additionally, you can pray this novena if you are preparing to begin prison ministry. You can use this novena to ask God to open the hearts of the prisoners you will encounter and to make your ministry fruitful.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Lord God, we thank You and praise You for the mercy and love You give us each day. We humbly ask for Your assistance for all prisoners.
You know intimately of the many trials, temptations, and sufferings that each of us faces in our fallen world. You want all of us to turn to You in repentance for our sins and to serve You in friendship. We ask You to be with all who are in need of conversion in their lives, especially those who are in prison.
Please pour Your assistance upon all who are in prison, especially those whose hardened hearts are in need of conversion!
Help us to truly repent of our sins each time we offend You. Help us to grow to a deeper friendship with You each day of our lives.

Many prisoners suffer physically during their time in prison. You, Who became Man for us, know what it means to suffer physical pain. Though You were sinless, You suffered the most extreme pain for us. You are able to bring relief, comfort, and the ability for us to unite our sufferings to You. Please be with all prisoners who are suffering physical pain.
Please pour Your assistance upon all who are in prison, and especially grant comfort and help to all prisoners who are suffering physically!
Help us to turn to You in every need we encounter. Help us to rely on Your assistance in our moments of greatest need.

Those who are in prison suffer in many ways, including emotional turmoil. Distance from family and friends, regret over past actions, and isolation can be very difficult for those in prison. You, Lord, suffered great desolation in the Garden of Gethsemane and on the Cross. Please be with all prisoners who are suffering emotional pain this day.
Please pour Your assistance upon all who are in prison, and especially bring comfort to all prisoners who are suffering emotionally!
Help us to always remember that we are never alone in our trials. Help us to truly unite all of our pains and sufferings to You, no matter how trying they might be.
