About St. Anthony Mary Claret

St. Anthony Mary Claret was born in the province of Barcelona, Spain in 1807. His father was a woolen manufacturer. Anthony had ten siblings, and he was the fifth-born child in his family.

After an elementary education in his home village, Anthony became a weaver when he was twelve. When Anthony was eighteen, he began working to specialize his trade as a loom programmer. He continued on this career path for two years, using his spare time to study Latin, French and engraving.

Soon, Anthony began to lose taste for these pursuits and instead realized he was called to religious life. He initially desired to become a Carthusian monk, but instead he decided to enter a diocesan seminary. He was ordained in 1835.

While working in his home parish, Anthony continued his study of theology for four years. Then, he decided to go to Rome to pursue mission work. He entered the Jesuit novitiate in Rome, but poor health forced him to give up this pursuit and return to Spain.

As he continued his work as a pastor in Spain, he worked diligently to serve the poor. Then, Anthony’s superiors sent him as an Apostolic Missionary throughout the war-ravaged area of Catalonia.

He traveled throughout this area on foot, and people came from miles around to hear his eloquent preaching. He also spent hours hearing confessions and was said to have the gift of discernment of consciences.

In 1848, Anthony’s life became endangered by enemies of the Church in the area. His superiors sent him to the Canary Islands. He stayed there for fifteen months. He conducted retreats there, and attendance at them was so high that he often preached additionally to anyone who came to listen before his retreats started.

When Anthony returned to Spain in 1849, he established the Congregation of the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (today known as the Claretians). He also founded the Training Institute of the Immaculate Conception, which was a foundation of Claretian nuns. Today, many educational institutions throughout the world are run by Claretians.

In 1850, Anthony was made archbishop of Santiago, Cuba. Before he traveled to his new post, he made three separate pilgrimages in honor of Our Lady.

During his reign as archbishop, Anthony’s diocese underwent many improvements and reforms. He saw that the seminary was reorganized, strengthened discipline among the clergy, and validated more than nine thousand marriages.

He also worked to improve the lives of the poor in his diocese. He established a hospital and many schools. He visited jails and hospitals, and he was vocal in denouncing oppression and racism.

In 1857, Queen Isabella II called Anthony back to Spain to be her confessor. He used his new influence to help the poor. In 1868, he went into exile in France with the queen. After participating in the First Vatican Council, Anthony died in 1870.
