St. Ava lived during the 800s in the Roman Empire. She was a Benedictine nun. She gave up a life of nobility to serve God.

St. Ava lived a life of great holiness. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy nun in many aspects of your life.

About St. Ava

St. Ava was born around the year 845 in the area of the Roman Empire that is now Belgium. Her father was King Pipin II of Aquitaine.

Because she and her family were members of the nobility, Ava’s early life was filled with the many luxuries of a royal lifestyle. But she also suffered greatly during her childhood because of eyesight problems. It is not known for certain whether she was born blind or if something caused her to lose her sight at a young age.

Ava’s inability to see led to her often being excluded by others around her, as society at that time viewed any physical disability with great distaste. Despite Ava’s suffering from this social rejection, she relied on her faith for strength.

Tradition holds that Ava eventually regained her eyesight. It is believed that her sight was miraculously restored after a holy woman from the area that is now Belgium prayed for her. This woman is now known as St. Reinfredis.

It is believed that the miraculous restoration of Ava’s eyesight helped inspire her decision to dedicate her life to God. She chose to leave behind her noble life of luxury and to enter the Benedictine religious order. She entered a monastery at Dinat in the area that is now Belgium.

As a Benedictine nun, Ava enthusiastically embraced the monastic way of life. She soon became well known among her companions for her dedication to prayer and service, as well as for her virtues. She was known to be very pious and humble.

Ava was eventually made the abbess of her monastery. As abbess, she led the monastery with great wisdom. Under her leadership, the spiritual life of the convent began to flourish more deeply. The communal life of the convent improved as well under her leadership. The other nuns of the convent looked to Ava as an example of holiness that they could try to imitate.

Despite Ava’s former life as a member of the nobility, she wholeheartedly embraced a life of simplicity and detachment from worldly things in the convent. She spent the rest of her life devoted to the care of the poor and to the formation of the nuns who were under her spiritual care in the convent.

It is believed that St. Ava died around the year 890, but nothing is known for certain about her manner of death.

St. Ava’s Feast Day: April 29th
