St. Brigid of Ireland is also known as St. Brigid of Kildare. She was an Irish nun who lived in the 400s-500s. St. Brigid was an abbess and established many monasteries.

St. Brigid was known to have performed many miracles during her life. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy nun in your life!

About St. Brigid

Little is known for certain about St. Brigid’s early life, but she was most likely born in the year 451.

Three early biographies of St. Brigid agree that she was born to a Christian slave woman named Brocca. Brocca was a Christian convert who was baptized by St. Patrick. Brigid’s father was Dubhthach, a chieftain of one of Ireland’s eastern provinces.

When it was discovered that Brigid’s mother Brocca was pregnant, Dubhthach’s wife made him sell Brocca to a druid. Brigid was then born into slavery.

Legend says that Brigid’s holiness was apparent from an early age. One legend even says that, as an infant, she continually vomited the milk that a druid tried to feed her because the druid was impure.

Throughout Brigid’s childhood, she grew in holiness. She had a charitable nature and was fond of caring for the poor. She soon began to bring about miraculous healings. In one instance, she gave away her mother’s who store of butter to the poor, and the butter was miraculously replenished for her mother.

When Brigid was about ten years old, she went back to her father’s household to work as a servant. While here, she began to habitually give away her father’s belongings to the poor. This annoyed her father so much that he brought her in a chariot to the King, intending to sell her.

On the way there, though, she gave away her father’s jeweled sword to a beggar so that the beggar could sell it for food money. The king, who was a Christian, saw that this girl was very holy and persuaded her father to give her freedom instead of selling her.

Brigid’s father eventually arranged for her to be married, but she refused and instead made a vow of chastity.

Brigid entered a monastery to devote her life to Christ as His bride, but little is known about her life as a nun.

According to tradition, she founded a monastery in Kildare around the year 480. Brigid is also credited with helping to organize religious life for women in Ireland. She established a monastic institution for women, and one for men as well.

Later, Brigid established a school of art. This school included instruction in metalwork and illumination.

St. Brigid died in the year 525, of natural causes. She was buried in a tomb beside the altar in the Kildare Cathedral, but her relics were later moved to the tomb of Sts. Patrick and Columba.

St. Brigid’s Feast Day: February 1st
