About St. Matthias
The year of St. Matthias’ birth is not known for certain, but he lived in the first century. Most of what we know about him comes from Scripture.
Though the Gospels do not mention Matthias, the Acts of the Apostles mentions him and describes how he came to be chosen as the replacement for Judas.
Acts tells us that Peter proposed to the group of about one hundred twenty disciples that a replacement for Judas should be chosen. He said that they should pick someone who was a follower of Jesus during His ministry on earth:
“Therefore, it is necessary that one of the men who accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day He was taken up from us, become with us a witness to His resurrection” (Acts 1:21-22).
After Peter said this, the group suggested two men to choose from: Barsabbas and Matthias. Thus it can be concluded that Matthias was a follower of Jesus throughout the time of His ministry on earth.
The disciples then prayed, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two You have chosen to take the place in this apostolic ministry from which Judas turned away to go to his own place” (Acts 1:24-25).
Then, the disciples cast lots. The lot fell to Matthias, so they considered him to be the replacement of Judas and counted him with the other eleven Apostles.
The New Testament does not contain any other information about Matthias. Some historians even debate his name, with some holding that he was also known as Nathaniel and mentioned in St. John’s Gospel. St. Clement of Alexandria referred to Zacchaeus in a way that suggested some thought Zacchaeus and Matthias to be the same person. And St. Eusebius referred to Matthias as “Tolmai.”
Most of the information about Matthias’ ministry and death is uncertain. Greek tradition holds that he ministered in Cappadocia and on the Caspian Sea’s coasts. Others hold that he preached in Judea and Aethiopia (in the area that is now Georgia) and that he was crucified. This position corresponds with ruins in modern-day Georgia that say Matthias is buried there.
Another tradition holds that Matthias preached in Jerusalem, where he was stoned and was then beheaded. It is believed that he died around the year 80 AD.
St. Matthias’ Feast Day: May 14th
