St. Peter Chanel did a lot of important missionary work. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy missionary priest in many aspects of your life.
About St. Peter Chanel
St. Peter Chanel was born in France in 1803. He had seven siblings, and he spent much of his youth working as a shepherd.
When Peter was around twelve years old, the priest of his family’s parish convinced Peter’s parents to send him to the school the priest had started. His intelligence and piety soon became evident to others. In 1814, a visiting priest from an abbey took over Peter’s education.
When Peter was about fourteen years old, he received his First Holy Communion. Around this time, he began to feel drawn to missionary work. When he read letters from French missionaries in America, he began to feel called to serve in foreign missions himself.
Peter entered a minor seminary in 1819. There, he distinguished himself in studies of oratory, Latin, and Christian doctrine. He entered the major seminary in 1824.
In 1827, Peter was ordained to the priesthood. While working as an assistant priest for a short time, he continued to read letters from missionaries. In 1828, Peter asked his bishop for permission to serve in the missions. At first, he was not granted permission and was instead assigned to a parish for three years.
Peter’s new parish was nearly deserted when he arrived. But under his care, the parish eventually began to thrive.
During his time at this parish, Peter heard of a new religious order that was to be dedicated to the Blessed Mother. In 1831, Peter joined this order. It was called the Society of Mary or the Marists. Since this order was largely dedicated to missionary work, Peter hoped to be assigned to a foreign mission. Instead, he was first assigned to serve as the spiritual director for a seminary.
When the Marists were asked to send missionaries to the land in the southwest Pacific in 1836, Peter was made superior of the group of seven Marist priests traveling there. They traveled on a long sea voyage, stopping first at the Canary Islands.
The group also traveled to Chile, the Gambier Islands, Tahiti, Wallis, and Vava’u. They eventually stayed in Futuna.
Peter met with many difficulties on Futuna. He struggled to learn the language and adjust to the different culture. Despite what appeared to be little progress in missionary work, Peter toiled patiently in caring for the sick and baptizing the dying. More and more natives eventually became willing to receive instruction and the sacraments.
The king of Futuna began to worry that Christianity would undermine his power. In 1841, he sent a warrior named Musumusu to take care of the problem. Musumusu went to Peter on the pretense of needing medical assistance, but he killed Peter with an ax.
