About St. Raphael the Archangel
Catholic Tradition holds that St. Raphael the Archangel is one of the seven archangels who stands before the throne of God. Of these seven, three are named in Scripture. Along with St. Michael and St. Gabriel, the Bible names St. Raphael.
St. Raphael’s name means “God heals.” It is thought that this name came about because St. Raphael was mentioned in an apocryphal book called the Book of Enoch. In this book, Raphael was said to have healed the earth after the fallen angels’ sins defiled it.
In chapter 18 of the Book of Genesis, Abraham was visited by three messengers from heaven. Many believe that these messengers were angels and that Raphael was one of them. Abraham fed the messengers, and they foretold that Abraham’s wife would bear him a son within a year.
Raphael is also referred to in the Book of Tobit. In this book, Raphael appeared in the form of a man to help Tobit’s son, Tobiah. In Tobit 5:13, Raphael told Tobit, “I am Azariah, son of the great Hananiah, one of your own kindred.”
Raphael accompanied Tobiah on a journey to another city where a woman named Sarah had been suffering. She had been married several times, but a demon killed each of her husbands before the marriage could be consummated. Raphael told Tobiah how to marry Sarah without being killed by the demon. Tobiah and Sarah were then married.
When Tobiah, Sarah, and Raphael returned to Tobit, Raphael revealed that he was actually an angel. In Tobit chapter 12, he said, “Now when you, Tobit, and Sarah prayed, it was I who presented the record of your prayer before the Glory of the Lord” (Tobit 12:12).
He said that God sent him to test Tobit, to bring healing to Tobit’s failed eyesight, and to bring healing to Sarah’s suffering.
He then told them, “I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand and serve before the Glory of the Lord” (Tobit 12:15).
In the New Testament, Sts. Michael and Gabriel are the only archangels mentioned by name. But many believe that Raphael is the angel mentioned in John 5:1-4. This angel stirred up the waters of the pool at Bethesda, and the waters brought healing to ill people. It is likely because of the healing power associated with Raphael that the angel mentioned in John’s Gospel is often thought to have been Raphael.
