About St. Roch
St. Roch was born around the year 1295, though some sources date his birth as late as 1348. Few details about his life are known for certain, but legend holds that he was born in southern France and that his father was the governor of their city. Legend also holds that his family were members of the nobility.
Roch’s birth was considered miraculous because his mother had been unable to conceive a child until she sought the Blessed Mother’s intercession. Roch was born following this, and legend holds that he had a red mark in the shape of a cross on his chest that grew as he did throughout his life.
Roch’s mother was said to have been very pious, and from an early age he followed her example of devotion.
When Roch was about twenty years old, his parents died. He decided to give all of his worldly possessions to the poor. He entered the Third Order of St. Francis. Even though Roch’s father had chosen him to succeed him as governor, Roch chose instead to live as a beggar while going on pilgrimage to Rome.
Roch arrived in Italy as the plague was raging there. He immediately began caring for the sick. It is believed that God worked many miracles of healing through him, as some of the patients he prayed for miraculously recovered.
Roch cared for the sick in hospitals in Cesena, Rimini, Novara, and Rome. When he moved on to a hospital in Piacenza, he contracted the plague himself.
As Roch suffered through his illness, he left the hospital for the solitude of the forest. He constructed a hut for himself out of leaves and boughs. A spring miraculously began flowing nearby to provide the water he needed. God also provided miraculously for his food needs, as a dog brought him bread. This dog also licked Roch’s wounds, and the wounds soon healed.
The dog’s owner, a count, eventually discovered Roch. He took Roch home with him so he could continue recovering there.
When Roch eventually returned to his own home city, he was thought to be a spy and was arrested. Roch was put into prison. He suffered meekly in prison for five years and then died there. The year of his death is thought to have been around the year 1327, though some sources state that it could have been as late as 1379.
St. Roch’s Feast Day: August 16th
