St. Timothy was a prominent figure in the early Church. He was the first bishop of Ephesus. He was also a companion of St. Paul.

Tradition says that St. Timothy was martyred around the year 97 A.D. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy bishop in your life!

About St. Timothy

St. Timothy was born around the year 17 A.D., in Lystra. His mother was a Jew and his father was Greek. Though his father was not Jewish, Timothy’s holy mother and grandmother ensured that Timothy was well-educated in Scripture during Timothy’s childhood.

St. Paul visited Lystra with Barnabas and brought many people to conversion there. By the time of St. Paul’s next journey to Lystra with Silas, Timothy was a prominent member of the Christian community in the city. Timothy’s mother and grandmother were also prominent members of the Christian community.

Not long after this, Timothy became St. Paul’s companion and helper in preaching. Because Timothy’s father was not a Jew, Timothy was not circumcised. So St. Paul said that Timothy should be circumcised in order that the Jews Timothy would be preaching to would not find Timothy scandalous. Timothy agreed to be circumcised.

In 52 A.D., Timothy left behind his home in order to accompany Paul and Silas to Macedonia. St. Augustine later noted Timothy’s selflessness and zeal in choosing to leave behind his parents and home in exchange for a life of poverty.

It is likely that Timothy was prone to illness, as Paul suggests that Timothy should drink some wine to help his stomach.

Timothy and Paul separated when Paul had to escape from the angry Jews in Berea. Timothy at first remained in Berea, but soon after he went to Thessalonica to encourage the persecuted Christians there. His report to Paul on the conditions of the Christians in Thessalonica led Paul to write the First Letter to the Thessalonians.

After this, Timothy went to Corinth. He was there with Paul when Paul wrote the letter to the Romans. He was also with Paul in Macedonia, and he went ahead of Paul to Troas. In 64 A.D., Paul left Timothy in Ephesus as the bishop of the Christian people there.

As Paul awaited his martyrdom in prison, he asked for his close friend Timothy to come give him a last goodbye.

The writer of Hebrews implies that Timothy was imprisoned at least once during his time in ministry, as the Hebrews author mentions Timothy being released from prison at the end of the letter.

Details about Timothy’s death are not known for certain, but tradition holds that he was martyred in Ephesus because he tried to put a stop to a procession that honored a pagan goddess. It is thought that Timothy was beaten, dragged through streets, and stoned to death by angry pagans around the year 97 A.D. when he was about eighty years old.
