St. Christopher is a popular Catholic saint about whom little is known with certainty. He is venerated as a martyr and most likely died in the year 251.

Many Catholics carry St. Christopher medals or keep them in their cars. This is because he is the patron saint of travelers.

You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy martyr in your life!

About St. Christopher

St. Christopher was a martyr in the mid-3rd century, who was most likely killed under the Emperor Decius. Apart from this, little is known for certain about St. Christopher, but there is legendary information about him that has been passed down over the years.

These legendary accounts say that St. Christopher was a very large man, about seven and a half feet tall.

Christopher had a desire to serve the greatest king he could. So he offered his service to a king who was said to be the most powerful. While serving this king, Christopher saw him cross himself when hearing the devil mentioned. Christopher inferred that this king considered the devil to be more powerful than the king. So Christopher decided to serve the devil.

Christopher found a band of thieves whose leader called himself the devil. But this man avoided Christian crosses in fear, so Christopher realized that there was Someone more powerful than the devil.

Christopher left the thieves and learned about the Christian Faith from a hermit. This holy man suggested a life of prayer and fasting for Christopher. As a large man who was hungry often, this seemed inordinately difficult for Christopher. So the hermit told him to think of another way to serve God.

Christopher decided to help travelers cross a nearby river. This river was deep and dangerous, and many travelers had drowned in the past while trying to cross it.

One day, Christopher came upon a small Child who asked for his help crossing the river. As he carried the Child across, the water rose and the Child became extremely heavy. Christopher had to exert himself mightily to bring the Child safely to the other side.

Then, Christopher asked the Child why He was so heavy. The Child said He was Christ and that Christopher had been carrying the weight of the whole world along with Him. The Child disappeared immediately after this.

Legends say that Christopher began to travel and evangelize after this. He traveled to Lycia in Asia Minor, where many Christians were being martyred. The officials there tried to force him to offer pagan sacrifices, but he refused.

The officials tried to persuade him to abandon his Faith through money and women, but he would not be swayed. He even converted the women who were sent to seduce him.

Then, the officials attempted to have him killed, but the first attempts to kill him failed. Finally, he was beheaded.
