About St. Titus

The year of St. Titus’ birth is not known for certain, but it was thought to be in the early first century. He was of Greek heritage, and it is probable that he studied Greek poetry and philosophy when he was a young man.

Titus was one of St. Paul’s converts to Christianity. After Titus converted, he worked as an interpreter and secretary for Paul. In the year 48 or 49, Titus went with Paul to Jerusalem for the council that was to discuss whether new Christian converts needed to follow Mosaic laws or not.

Titus continued missionary work with St. Paul for some time. Then in 55 or 56, Paul left to do missionary work in Asia. He had Titus leave Ephesus and travel to Corinth. Paul prepared Titus to work on the conflict and division there that was caused by Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians.

Titus also prepared to deal with the consequences of a challenge to Paul’s authority that someone had made in Corinth. Paul gave Titus a severe letter to deliver to the Corinthians. Though this letter was eventually lost, Paul refers to it in 2 Corinthians.

Titus was successful in his mission to Corinth. After his work in Corinth was complete, he traveled to Macedonia to meet Paul. Paul was very joyful to receive the news of Titus’ successful work in Corinth. Paul then wrote his second letter to the Corinthians.

Titus traveled back to Corinth, taking Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians with him. Paul eventually went to Corinth as well. From Corinth, he sent Titus to work on collecting alms for the Jerusalem Christians who were in need.

When Paul was later released from prison in Rome, he traveled to the island of Crete to preach the Gospel there. But Paul was greatly needed by the Christian communities in other areas, so he ordained Titus as the bishop of Crete. Titus worked among the Christians there to continue the mission that Paul had started.

St. John Chrysostom later commented that this decision of Paul showed the great esteem he had for Titus. In Paul’s letter to Titus, he refers to Titus as “my true child in our common faith” (Titus 1:4).

Paul eventually sent for Titus to join him in Epirus. Titus also traveled to Dalmatia. Details about Titus’ death are not known for certain. He is thought to have died in the year 96, and he was buried in Crete.

St. Titus’ Feast Day: January 26th
