St. Vitus was an Early Christian martyr. He lived in the 200s-300s. He was martyred during his adolescence.

St. Vitus is venerated as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers because of his powerful intercession. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy youth in many aspects of your life.

About the St. Vitus Novena

St. Vitus was born around the year 290 in Sicily. Little is known about him for certain, but legend holds that he was the only son of a senator.

It is believed that Vitus converted to Christianity during his childhood, probably in part due to the influence of Christians who served as his tutor and his nanny. Some accounts hold that Vitus was only seven years old at the time, while other accounts hold that he was twelve years old.

It is believed that Vitus worked many miracles and helped bring many people to conversion. Vitus’ father was not a Christian. He attempted to make Vitus renounce the Christian faith, but Vitus refused. Even when his father had him tortured, Vitus refused to renounce his faith.

Vitus fled to Lucania with his tutor and his nanny. From there, he was taken to Rome. Because his reputation for working miracles had spread, Vitus was taken to the emperor’s son, who was afflicted with a disorder that could not be cured. Many thought that the emperor’s son was possessed by an evil spirit.

Vitus’ intercession brought about a cure for the emperor’s son. Some sources hold that Vitus drove an evil spirit out of him, while other sources hold that Vitus miraculously cured him of epilepsy.

After working this miraculous cure, Vitus held fast to his Christian faith amongst the pagans. The emperor asked Vitus to renounce his faith and to offer sacrifice to pagan idols. When Vitus refused to do this, the emperor had him tortured. Vitus’ tutor and nanny were also tortured by the emperor.

All three of them were then taken back to Lucania from Rome. It is believed that an angel miraculously took them to Lucania.

Some accounts hold that as a result of the emperor’s tortures, Vitus, his tutor, and nanny died in Lucania. Other accounts hold that they were miraculously spared from harm during the torture. The legend that they died from the injuries sustained during torture corresponds to historical records of Christians dying of martyrdom in Lucania around this time.

It is believed that Vitus appeared to a holy woman named Florentia three days after his death and that he led her to the bodies of himself, his tutor, and his nanny. She then buried the three bodies where she found them. Vitus’ relics were moved to Germany in 836. Devotion to St. Vitus grew strong in Germany, Italy, and Bohemia.
