Sts. Cosmas and Damian lived very holy lives. You can use this novena to seek intercession from these holy martyrs in many aspects of your life.
About Sts. Cosmas and Damian
The year of Sts. Cosmas’ and Damian’s births is not known for certain, but it is believed to have been during the 3rd century. Tradition holds that they were born in Arabia.
Little is known for certain about the childhood of the twin brothers, but it is believed that they had three younger brothers named Anthimus, Leontius, and Euprepius. These three younger brothers were practically inseparable from Cosmas and Damian throughout their lives. It is also believed that their parents were devout Christians.
Cosmas and Damian’s father died before they reached adulthood. As young men, they studied medicine in Antioch. They then returned to their home city to both practice medicine and preach Christianity to others.
Cosmas and Damian gained a great reputation as skilled doctors. It is believed that they were able to cure blindness, paralysis, and fever. They often treated wounds, fractures, and infectious diseases. Out of charity, they chose to take no payment for their services. Because of this, they were called “the silverless.”
Cosmas and Damian lived their Christian faith with great devotion. Through their example of charitable service as doctors, they helped bring many people to the faith.
When Emperor Diocletian began persecuting Christians, Cosmas and Damian were quickly targeted because of their reputation as Christian doctors. A prefect named Lysius had Cosmas and Damian arrested because of their Christian faith. Lysius ordered them to renounce their faith, but Cosmas and Damian remained steadfast.
Cosmas and Damian were tortured in many ways, but God miraculously kept them alive. Though they were tortured with fire and water, were stoned, and were hung on a cross, they courageously refused to give up their faith. When none of these tortures killed Cosmas and Damian, their persecutors beheaded them with a sword. It is believed that they died around the year 287. It is also believed that their three brothers were martyred with them as well.
Cosmas’ and Damian’s remains were buried in Syria, in the city of Cyrus. During the 500s, Emperor Justinian I credited their intercession for his cure from a deadly disease. In gratitude for his cure, Justinian rebuilt the church that was dedicated to them in Constantinople. This church became a place of pilgrimage.
Pope Felix IV also had a church built in Cosmas’ and Damian’s honor. The mosaics in this church eventually became some of the most valuable art in Rome.
