Have you ever felt rejected? St. Margaret of Castello was rejected, misunderstood, and held in contempt for many reasons. She even suffered, spending fourteen years isolated in one room at the order of her parents and was eventually abandoned by them in an unfamiliar town. Through her suffering and infirmities, she came to have a resilient faith and lived a life of deep contemplation.

About St. Margaret of Castello

Margaret was born in Metola, Italy in 1287 to powerful noble parents Parisio and Lady Emilia. It was evident from birth that Margaret had physical disabilities, would be of short stature, was blind and had a curvature of the spine known as Kyphosis - more commonly known during her lifetime as a hunchback.

Her parents sought to protect their reputation and appearance by keeping Margaret a secret within the walls of the castle. They not only kept her a secret, but also didn’t show her any love.

One day a guest met Margaret in the hallway of their castle. Shortly after Margaret’s parents had a small room built for her to be confined to for the next fourteen years, so no guests would stumble upon her.

The cell-like room was built adjacent to the chapel. It was a short distance from the castle where she could still hear the Mass being said and receive communion.

She had very few visitors, but the priest of the chapel saw her great intelligence and taught her the basics of the faith. He soon saw that she had an incredible capacity for the faith-life.

Her father’s land came under threat and soon Margaret’s parents sought a new solution to their daughters disabilities. They heard of miracles occurring frequently at a shrine nearby so they sought a cure while there was still peace.

They made a pilgrimage to Citta di Castello, Italy and when a cure was not found, Margaret was abandoned. This was particularly hard for Margaret since she could not see and wasn’t familiar with the streets of the town. But, she was consoled by the fact that Jesus too was abandoned and this was yet another way in which she could be closer to her Savior.

She soon found refuge among the poorest in the city who took turns housing her as long as they had the means. Everyone began to recognize that there was something extraordinary about Margaret. She maintained a cheerfulness and hope despite her hardships.

She lived with religious sisters but their worldliness, which was a common problem of that time, did not sit well with Margaret who hoped to live according to the rule of the order. She soon found herself without a home, since her devoutness caused discord amongst the religious sisters.

St. Margaret remained charitable towards the sisters and soon found a home with a wealthy family. She became a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic, also known as Lay Dominicans. This Order is for those wishing to live according to the spirituality of St. Dominic while living a life in the world.

She lived a life comforting those suffering. She is especially known for visiting and sharing the faith with prisoners living in atrocious conditions. She died at the age of 33 and the citizens demanded that she be buried in the church, which was unusual at the time.

St. Margaret of Castello Novena - Day 1

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Dear God, thank You for the gift of life that You have given me. I am sorry for the times when I have failed to recognize the value and sacredness of life in others.

You created St. Margaret with a great capacity for loving others, and with unique gifts that many people failed to see during her lifetime. Please give special grace to those parents considering abortions. Give them the courage to choose life and open their hearts to the child that God has given to them.

St. Margaret you were rejected by your own parents, yet you saw God’s goodness in all circumstances. You accepted the years of loneliness and isolation that you endured without losing hope. You saw suffering as a gift from God that helped your faith blossom. Pray that I would accept the suffering I have been given in this life so that I may more fully share in life with Christ in the next. Help me to not become bitter because of the suffering I endure.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Dear God, thank You for the gift of life that You have given me. I am sorry for the times when I have failed to recognize the value and sacredness of life in others.

You strengthened St. Margaret through her faith. You brought about much spiritual fruit in her life through her contemplative prayer. Lord, guide me in living a life filled with prayer. Assist me in offering up my works and their fruits to you, O Lord.

St. Margaret, you lived in isolation for years with the Faith as your only consolation. You took special care to attend Mass and Confession regularly. You held a special devotion to St. Joseph and meditated upon the life of The Holy Family. Pray for me that I too might have the same fervor of faith that you had. In following your example, I firmly resolve to seek the Sacraments, and continue to learn more about the Faith.

Amen.

Dear God, thank You for the gift of life that You have given me. I am sorry for the times when I have failed to recognize the value and sacredness of life in others.

You create each person with a great capacity for forgiveness and compassion. When I feel jaded by the evils of this world and the hurts others have committed against me, show me how to forgive. I thank you God for your unfailing forgiveness and merciful gaze when I have failed to live up to Your commandments.

St. Margaret, your parents despised your very existence and abandoned you. Yet, you found the courage to forgive them. Help me to forgive those who have hurt me. Help me to let go of my past wounds, that I may experience full healing from them. Let us pray for all those living in abusive relationships and especially for children who don’t know the love of their parents.

Give me a heart that is overflowing with love for You and for others -- that I might be generous and kind towards others like Saint Margaret.

St. Margaret, you possessed a hope in Christ that led you to accept God’s will in all circumstances. You were cheerful to all you met, even those who held you in contempt. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Dear God, thank You for the gift of life that You have given me. I am sorry for the times when I have failed to recognize the value and sacredness of life in others.

Holy Spirit, guide me to share your message with those who need some hope in their life and could benefit from hearing God’s word today. Let my words be spoken in a way that communicates truth and goodness first and foremost. I pray that I might listen well, putting other people’s needs above my own.

St. Margaret, you sought to spread Christ’s message to those who were in great need of hope. You visited prisoners living in harsh conditions to share the gospel message. You knew that spiritual poverty could be worse for the soul than the harshest physical circumstances. Help me to spread the gospel. Please pray that I could live a life joyfully that proclaims a peace that only Christ can bring.

Dear God, thank You for the gift of life that You have given me. I am sorry for the times when I have failed to recognize the value and sacredness of life in others.

I thank you, God, for all the good things you have given me in my life. For the shelter you provide me with, for the food I get to eat, for the friends and family I have. I thank You for the weather, and the seasons, for the stars at night and the birds in the sky. Thank You for for filling my soul with peace and goodness.

St. Margaret, although your parents were nobles, and had a vast amount of wealth, you never sought worldly status or possessions. You knew that material possessions could not fill the true desires of your heart. St. Margaret, thank you for your example of spiritual poverty. In a world filled with greed and power struggles, you show that there is a different path.

Amen.

Dear God, thank You for the gift of life that You have given me. I am sorry for the times when I have failed to recognize the value and sacredness of life in others.

Thank You, God, for creating me the way I am. Thank you for creating my neighbors, my friends and my family and bringing them into my life. Please be with those people who struggle with physical disabilities and those who have been judged because of their physical appearance.

St. Margaret, you were often looked at differently because of your physical disabilities. These disabilities didn’t stop you from living a life centered on Christ. Help me to see beyond labels, so that I may see each person for who they are. Pray that I might accept every part of myself, including my physical appearance, as part of God’s beautiful creation.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen

Dear God, thank You for the gift of life that You have given me. I am sorry for the times when I have failed to recognize the value and sacredness of life in others.

Please remember those who will go to sleep tonight without a roof over their head. Protect those who are vulnerable and needing special care. Keep those children who haven’t known a stable home close to Your heart. Open the doors to those who seek to welcome children into their homes.

St. Margaret, you were welcomed graciously into the homes of those who were experiencing poverty. Please pray for those children looking for forever homes. Please pray that more hearts would consider opening up their homes to children through adoption and foster care, and that those parents can have the strength to persevere when times are difficult. Pray for those birth mothers who are separated from their children, that they may know the peace of Christ.

St. Margaret of Castello Novena - Day 9

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Dear God, thank You for the gift of life that You have given me. I am sorry for the times when I have failed to recognize the value and sacredness of life in others.

Let my faith burn brighter with love for you, God, at all times -- that I may see your wonders in the smallest of everyday happenings. Please give me the grace to cling to Your truth in good times and bad. For a resilient faith that grows deeper and deeper each day.

Saint Margaret, many miracles occurred during your lifetime. When your home was up in flames, you put your cloak on the raging fire and then you calmly return to praying. Knowing the wonders of the Faith, you did not look for exterior miracles to affirm your faith -- even though to all the onlookers the raging fire being extinguished was unexplainable. Help me to turn to prayer regularly and not let minor distractions stop me from returning to prayer.

Please intercede on my behalf for these intentions (State your intentions here). Amen.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.
