Show HidePope St. Paul VI was a Pope during the 20th century. He re-convened the Second Vatican Council after the death of his predecessor, Pope St. John XXIII, had automatically closed it.
Pope St. Paul VI was also well-known for writing the encyclical Humanae Vitae, which explained the Church’s position on artificial contraception. He was a holy Pope with a deep love for God and concern for the poor.

About Pope St. Paul VI
Pope St. Paul VI was born as Giovanni Montini in 1897, in Italy. His father was a member of the Italian Parliament, and his mother was from a noble family. He had two brothers.
As a child, Giovanni attended a school run by Jesuits. He often had to be absent from school because he was ill. When he was nineteen years old, he entered the seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1920. He then completed a doctorate degree in canon law.
Giovanni continued his studies in philosophy, literature, and canon law. He became a member of the Vatican Secretariat of State at age twenty-five. He served there for thirty years. Because of this, he was never appointed to a position as a parish priest.
Giovanni was appointed archbishop of Milan in 1954. As archbishop, he worked to win back many Catholic workers who had fallen away from the Church. He also worked to rebuild the Church on a local level, which had suffered greatly during World War II.
Giovanni was the first cardinal appointed by Pope St. John XXIII during Pope John’s pontificate. Giovanni assisted him in preparing for the Second Vatican Council. He also participated in the early sessions of the Council.
In 1963, Pope St. John XXIII died and Giovanni was elected as his successor. As Pope Paul VI, he chose to continue the Second Vatican Council.
When Vatican II concluded in 1965, Paul VI faced the difficult task of implementing the Council’s decisions. He went about this task with an attitude of assessment and awareness of potential complications. Many of his critics assumed he was being timid and indecisive, but he was actually just proceeding with great caution as he worked to implement changes to traditions that were centuries old.
In 1964, Pope Paul VI visited the Holy Land. He made several more international trips during his time as Pope, which was not common for a Pope to do at that time. He worked to establish diplomatic relationships with forty countries.
During his time as Pope, Paul VI wrote seven encyclicals. His last encyclical, which he wrote in 1968, was Humanae Vitae. This encyclical firmly declared the Church teaching against artificial contraception. Many of his critics responded with harsh negativity toward him and toward Papal authority because of this encyclical.
Paul VI also took a strong stand in favor of priestly celibacy, seeing the growing number of priests leaving their vocation as a very disturbing trend in the Church. Additionally, he worked to improve care for the poor and for workers.
Pope St. Paul VI died in 1978.

Pope St. Paul VI, you entered the seminary when you were just nineteen years old. You were soon ordained, and you served God’s Church faithfully for the rest of your life.
Please bring my petitions before God with such faithfulness!
You became a member of the Vatican Secretariat of State as a young priest. In this role and throughout the rest of your life you never ceased serving God worthily.
Pray for me, that I may always be open to serving God as He calls me to. Pray that I may be eager to devote my life to Him.
