About Juliana Falconieri

St. Juliana Falconieri was born in 1270 in Florence. Her parents were wealthy and were members of the nobility.

When Juliana was still very young, her father died. She was then raised by her mother and uncle. Her uncle, Alexis Falconieri, was one of the seven founders of the Servite Order. He greatly influenced her in her youth. She decided to follow his example and enter the consecrated life.

When she was fifteen years old, Juliana announced that she did not wish to marry, despite her family’s plans for her marriage. One year later, around 1285, Juliana became a Servite Tertiary. She received the Servite Tertiary habit from St. Philip Benizi, who was the Prior General of the Order at the time.

Though Juliana was following the rule of life given her by St. Philip Benizi, she continued living at home until her mother died in 1304. Then, Juliana gathered a group of women who wished to dedicate themselves to prayer and holy work.

Juliana and these women moved into a house of their own in 1305. This house became the convent for the Third Order Servite Sisters. Juliana later wrote a rule of life for their order and was appointed Superior of the order.

The habit of Juliana’s religious order was a white veil and a black gown with short sleeves. The sleeves were short so that it would be easier for the sisters to work. The sisters’ work consisted mostly of care for the sick and other works of mercy.

Juliana devoted herself to caring for those in need. She cared for the sick in the streets, in their homes, and in hospitals. She had no fear for her own health and did not hesitate to care for those who were contagious. She was even known to suck on patients’ open sores, as this was thought to draw out the poison.

Juliana also had a deep prayer life. While praying, she sometimes fell into ecstasy. On some occasions, these ecstasies lasted for hours.

Before her death at age seventy-one in 1341, Juliana suffered greatly from illness. She was unable to receive the Eucharist because she was vomiting almost constantly.

She asked the priest to place a corporal on her chest and to place the Host on the corporal. After a short time, the Host disappeared and Juliana died. The image of the cross, identical to the one on the Host, was on her chest.
