St. Peter was one of the twelve Apostles who were befriended and mentored by Jesus. One aspect of Peter’s personality that shows up time and again through the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles is his zeal. He is always striving to do what is right, but even when he makes mistakes, he does all things wholeheartedly. This novena will focus on the zeal of St. Peter.

About St. Peter

The life of St. Peter is documented in the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. Peter’s original name was Simon. He was a fisherman who was called by Jesus to be one of the twelve Apostles along with his brother, St. Andrew. During one conversation, when Jesus asked who the people said He was, Simon said that He was the Son of God, a truth that had been revealed to him by the Father, but was (at that time) unknown to the other Apostles. Jesus called him “Cephas” or Peter, which means Rock, and told him that on this rock He would build His Church, and the gates of hell would not prevail against it. It is in this moment that Jesus appointed Peter to be the first Pope, and the gates of hell have not prevailed against the Church and the Papacy all these centuries later, as Jesus promised. St. Peter’s remains are buried under St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, where the current Pope often says Mass.
